With the turning of the summer season into autumn, we begin to prepare the inner strength and courage we need to face the dark cold winter. Our Michaelmas Festival helps us do so. The grade school’s Festival will be celebrated Friday, September 29 with the performance of our version of a traditional Michaelmas play, “St. George and the Dragon”, performed by students from grades two to eight. Our new grade one students will attend the play as audience members. Parents and members of the school community are warmly invited to attend the play, which begins at approximately 11:30 a.m.
Following the play, the grade school students engage in “will activities”. Following a shared lunch, students will participate in cooperative games and share in a snack together.
Each grade is asked to contribute to the snack, bringing the following items in on Friday morning. These can be left on the table, outside the Parent and Child/Bounding Bunnies KG room. Grade 7 students, with the help and direction of Mr. Koop and Gr. 7 Class Parents, will be preparing the snack, so nothing needs to be pre-cut at home this year:
Grade One: oranges
Grade Two: apples
Grade Three: bananas (each student only needs to bring 1 or 2 bananas)
Grade Four: pears
Grade Five: crackers
Grade Six: cheese
Grade Seven: cheese
Grade Eight: gluten-free crackers
We are asking that the children, and any adults in attendance, dress in solid red, the colour of courage, of autumn’s bountiful harvest, autumn leaves, the dragon’s fire, and the fire within each one of us. (Please no logos or graphics!)
Any parents who would like to volunteer for part or all of the day’s Festival activities are welcome. Immediately after the play, the grades classes will all be participating in some kind of clean-up activity in and around the school premises. Parent Volunteers would be most welcome and their help much appreciated – please let your child’s class teacher know if you are able to give some of your time during the day. All the Grades students will be placed in teams comprised of students from each grade and following the clean-up they will eat lunch and share the Dragon Bread with their teams inside the school. After lunch, the teams will play cooperative games, finish with “Dragon Tag”, sit in circle for snacks. The Festival will end with a Grand Spiral and each class recite their end of school day verse.
We are looking for large containers for dispensing water as well as large outside push-brooms for sweeping the round tarmac area of the parking lot. If you can lend us something, bring it to school on Thursday. Thank you.
Please note, this is a grades school festival only. The kindergarten children will be celebrating the Michaelmas season with their own Harvest Festival.
